Entourage GTD: Quick Links
July 4th, 2007 by Adam Sneller
So what’s the big deal with links? Think of a link as being the sticky side of a Post-It note. This is the glue that holds information together. Only it’s not just notes scribbled on little yellow bits of paper. In Entourage, you can link tasks to email, email to contacts, contacts to projects, projects to files, files to notes, notes to tasks… Gadzooks, man!
But for all that power, the system is yet incomplete. Because while Entourage will let you link anything to anything, it doesn’t provide a keyboard shortcut so that you can quickly retrieve the data! Don’t all gasp at once.
Adam’s Quick Fix
Fortunately, OS X gives us a way around this. Navigate to your Applications folder and open the System Preferences panel. Click on “Keyboard & Mouse”, which brings up the screen below.

Select Application Keyboard Shortcuts and click the “+” symbol (circled in blue). This will bring up the following entry form. Fill this out as shown in the picture.

When you are done, press the Add button and close out of System Preferences. The next time you load Entourage, select a contact, task or other item that has linked objects, navigate to the Tools menu, and you should see your newly created keyboard shortcut.

Adam,
This is, of course, an appropriate complaint re: Entourage, and a good reminder of OS X’s ability to add a keyboard shortcut to any application. But you fail to mention that Cmd-L is already an Entourage shortcut! (It refreshes a message list — under View menu; something I use frequently when viewing online mailboxes.) Hmmm . . . now to decide what key shortcut to use instead. . . .

Dan - good point!
Since I get my mail from a POP3 account, I don’t use “Refresh Message List”. In fact, this doesn’t even show up as an option (except if I’m in a custom mail view).
It looks like Shift-Cmd-L would work for you, though?
Good luck,
-Adam

Very nice one - extremely useful. The Links feature in Entourage 2008 is powerful, but it’s not too visible. Your shortcut does wonders in boosting productivity!
Once again… you’ve saved me a lot of time! Kudos!
